It's been about a dozen years in the making, but the new Welcome to Hornby sign has been erected on Halton Region land at Trafalgar Rd. and Hornby Rd. just north of Steeles Ave. The Hornby Area Rate Payers first attempted to put a sign on the property more than a decade ago before one of the project's major sponsors pulled their support. One of the Hornby Sign Project committee members, Earl Mc- Dowell, got the wheels in motion again earlier this year. Thanks to the expertise of Horn- by's FL Signs, the financial backing of the local community along with the approvals from Halton Region and the Town of Halton Hills, the sign was built and cemented into the ground with cedar posts and made of reflective vinyl material that should catch the eye of driv- ers and their passengers headed southbound on Trafalgar Rd. at nighttime. Sign committee member Erik Kowal said that because of the overwhelming outpouring of sup- port from Hornby residents for the project, another Welcome To Hornby sign has been constructed and will be installed soon in front of the Hornby Park ball diamonds at Steeles Ave. and Sixth Line. The graphic for the name Horn- by in the sign was taken from the jerseys of softball and baseball teams that have represented the hamlet for decades. Donations are being accepted to help cover the costs of the signs. For more info call Erik Kowal at 905-876-1582. Photo by Eamonn Maher Hornby unveils new, long-awaited sign Alternative chosen for Trafalgar Rd./Maple Ave. improvement After presenting three alternatives to the Trafal- gar Rd. and Maple Ave. intersection, the Halton Region has made a decision. On Dec. 2, Halton Region and Public Works representatives set up a public information centre to tell the residents of Halton Hills what they plan to do with the intersection. Three alternatives were brought to the table: two involving moving the in- tersection east and in the other, moving it west. "The difference between the options was re- ally how we treated the intersection at Maple Avenue and Trafalgar Road," said Lisa De Ange- lis, Public Works Director of Infrastructure and Policy Planning for the region. "In this case, the one we identified as preferred was relocating that intersection to the east." Each alternative was assessed against an evalu- ation criteria, along with mounds of feedback, and in the end, the first alternative, moving the intersec- tion to the east, was chosen as the preferred option. "We received quite a bit of feedback and in- formation that the team is now assessing," De Angelis said. "They're looking at whether or not there are some refinements required and we're continuing to meet with stakeholders." The next stage is finalizing the environmental report, which includes the Municipal Class En- vironmental Assessment (EA), the consultations the region has held and the comments that have come in. Once the report is completed, a notice will go out and residents are welcome to view it on the Halton Region's website. "We appreciated the fact we have had a lot of interest in this project, and we have received a lot of valuable feedback and information from the residents," De Angelis said. "Their time is very much appreciated." If you have any questions, concerns or com- ments, please direct them to Jeff Reid, project man- ager with the region, at (905) 825-6000 ext. 7920.
