David Grieve gets lost, but rather than get frustrated, he relishes it. In those moments of getting lost he has made his best discoveries. While driving in the Ontario coun- tryside he'll stumble upon an unusual land formation, a majestic singular tree or a gently repeating pattern of crops. He'll pull over, get out of his car, and photograph it. His endeavours are sometimes rewarded with threats from farmers, or cautions by the police, but always with a memory of a tree or a landscape that he can recreate in his studio. The act of painting it with thick linear brushstrokes is so absorbing that the artist gets lost all over again in the process of recreating that one re- markable tree or the open sky above a field. Grieve was first introduced to the medium by his mother. Together, they attended an afternoon painting group in St. George, beginning when Grieve was just seven. He fondly re- members his first introduction to oils, particularly the slow drying quality of the paint and the heady aroma in the studio. He studied fine art at the Uni- versity of Guelph, where he was the recipient of the Michael Scotchmer Scholarship. Together with his wife and three sons, Grieve divides his time between their home and his studio in Brantford and the family cabin on Jack Lake in North Kawartha. His paintings have been showcased in commercial as well as public galleries across Canada and the U.S.A. Williams Mill Gallery is delighted to partner with Art of Traderhorn to host a month-long show, with new work from Grieve. The show opens Jan. 21, and continues thru February 14.
