The Standards are designed to maximize development's many positive attributes while minimizing its potentially negative impacts. This is being accomplished by improving energy and water efficiency, waste management, resource use and community design of new development. To date, over 400 residential units and about 120,000 square metres of non-residential de- velopment are in the process of implementing the Green De- velopment Standards and sus- tainable development features. To celebrate and recognize the leadership demonstrated by developments that imple- ment the Green Develop- ment Standards, the Town has launched the Green Develop- ment Leadership Awards. This new municipal award program will support implementation of the standards, recognize devel- opment industry leaders and help raise market awareness of the benefits of high-perfor- mance sustainable develop- ment. Mayor Bonnette said: "De- velopment, whether residen- tial, commercial or industrial, can make a significant contri- bution to the sustainability and wellbeing of our community. This includes improving energy and water efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ad- dressing climate change and designing our neighbourhoods to be more walkable. The Green Development Leadership Awards are an opportunity to celebrate and recognize in- dustry leaders that are making a valuable contribution to the sustainability of Halton Hills." Awards will be granted in two categories: Award of Achievement: Awarded to projects that have achieved the minimum num- ber of points to comply with the Standards, without third-party verification. Award of Excellence: A w a r d e d to projects that have ex- ceeded the m i n i m u m number of points by at least 20%, have con- firmed com- pliance post- construction with third-party certification and have demonstrated excel- lence or innovation in devel- opment. Nominations can be submit- ted by anyone, including the development industry, con- sultants, residents, community associations, industry asso- ciations, suppliers, Councillors and staff. Self-nominations are acceptable. The 2016 deadline for sub- missions is June 24, 2016. The application process is straightfor- ward.
