In past years, fraudsters have used what's known as the CRA Scam in which people receive phone calls from someone claiming to represent the Ca- nadian Revenue Agency, informing the prospective victim that they owe over- due taxes, and if they don't pay, they'll be arrested. Those callers who simply hang up on the request for cash are usually called back shortly after by someone identify- ing themselves as a police officer. Only now, the would-be scammers utilize special software to manipulate phone numbers that appear on call display as though they're coming from the Halton Regional Police and a male party identifies himself as an officer. The HRPS does not engage in tax collection and do not arrest individuals for having overdue taxes. In one recent case in York Region, af- ter the complainant hung up on the al- leged police officer, two men in a black SUV showed up at the woman's home and she wouldn't answer the door be- fore they eventually drove away.
