Now available at COMMUNITY You can thrill to wonderful music for a great cause as GFORCe (Georgetown Friends of Ref- ugees Committee) presents United in Song on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. The massed choirs of St John's United Church, St. Andrew's United Church and Knox Presbyterian Church will present music that ranges from Paul Simon to Les Miserables to Oscar Peterson, along with solo and small group performances and accompaniment on organ, grand piano, djembe drums and guitar. A coalition of the three churches and many community volunteers, GFORCe is bringing a Syrian refugee family to Georgetown, probably this spring. They must raise more than $30,000 to support the family for a year. Already they have free storage space jammed with furnish- ings, employment offers, and free dentistry and eye care offered by professionals in this area. "United in Song will bring singers and musi- cians from all three churches together in a vis- ible and audible symbol of our combined com- mitment to this sponsorship," says organizer Carolyn Maule, Music Director at St. John's. "Hopefully we will raise the funds to allow this family to find a new home and welcoming community here." Also providing music leadership are Haydn Evans from Knox Church and Susan Whaley of St. Andrew's. There is no admission charge for the con- cert, but there will be a freewill offering and gifts of $20 or more will be receipted. First come, first seated! Doors will open at 7:15 p.m. at St. John's United Church, 11 Guelph St., Georgetown. The building is fully accessible. Following a complete renovation of the church sanctuary in 2014, audience members can bask in the glow of soft lights, the gleam of an extended hardwood stage, a special slide presentation before the show, and the comfiest concert seat- ing in town.
