Officers were conducting pro- active patrols in the area of Nashville North in Norval when they observed three young males in a vehicle exiting the parking lot at around 1:20 a.m. The suspect vehicle, a Toyota Sien- na, entered the roadway at a high rate of speed and was driven erratically, at one point veering into the opposite lane of traffic, police reported. The vehicle was pulled over and the investigating officer noted a strong odour of alcohol when speaking with the driver, who showed signs of intoxi- cation. The suspect said he was unfamiliar with "the dark roads" of Georgetown before failing a roadside screening test. The Drug, Gun and Gang Unit has received sev- eral calls from local pharmacists and parents re- garding this recent trend. Dextromethorphan is the active ingredient in several over the counter cough medicine. The illicit use of Dextromethorphan causes a high or a so called 'robo-trip.' The effects can be compared to effects of Ketamine or Phencyclidine (PCP). Dextromethorphan is not listed in the Con- trolled Drugs and Substances Act and is therefore an over-the-counter medicine. Several pharmacies in Halton have noticed youths coming into to buy cough medicines containing Dextromethorphan, some pharmacists have placed them behind the counter. Although Dextromethorphan is not a con- trolled substance, the recreationally use and pos- sible overdose could lead to other criminal charges such as; administering a noxious substance or criminal negligence.
