Gary Carr, Regional Chair The 2018-2019 Halton Region Guide &Waste Collection Calendar is here! Check your mailbox this week for your copy of the 2018-2019 Halton Region Guide & Waste Calendar. The annual calendar and guide is your resource for understanding the waste management services and programs Halton Region offers. Over the years, we have made important investments in waste reduction technology, improved our curbside waste collection services and seen a real commitment from residents to reduce waste at home and in the community. With your continued support and participation in our Blue Box and Green Cart programs, Halton has diverted nearly 60 per cent of waste from landfill. This has helped extend the lifespan of the landfill from 2012 to 2044--30 years longer than expected--and saved taxpayers more than $15 million. We continue to provide residents with easy and convenient ways to manage household waste. Visit halton.ca/waste or download the OneHalton app to sign up for weekly waste collection reminders, use the Put Waste in its Place tool, schedule a metal or appliance pick up and more. Together, we can continue to support a green and sustainable community for generations to come. Internship opportunities at Halton Region Later this month, we will begin recruitment for Halton Region's 2018-2019 Internship and Apprenticeship Program. This initiative allows recent graduates to gain paid, meaningful experience in their fields by supporting and enhancing Regional programs and services. Our internship program is a great opportunity for young people, and is one of the many reasons that Mediacorp Canada Inc. has named Halton Region one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for the seventh year in a row. The award highlights our positive and supportive working environments that promote the growth and engagement of employees. As a value-based organization, we are defined by our commitment to employee recognition, well-being and professional development. The 20 interns who joined us in 2017 have already contributed to strategic projects, learned from seasoned professionals and developed skills that will help them succeed in their careers. We look forward to providing similarly positive experiences to a new group of high-performing young people this year--to learn more, visit halton.ca/internship. During extreme cold weather, indoor plumbing is at a greater risk of freezing, which can cause a disruption in your water supply. Frozen plumbing can also cause your pipes to burst, which can result in significant and costly water damage to your home. To avoid frozen pipes this winter, follow these simple tips: • Ensure that your indoor temperature is above 12 degrees Celsius, especially in areas where your plumbing and water meter are located. • Keep doorways in basement areas, storage rooms and crawl spaces open to allow warm air circulation. • Ensure pipes are properly insulated, such as those within outside walls, under kitchen sinks and bathroom cabinets, in crawl spaces and in attics. • If you are going to be away, have someone check in on your home.
