31| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,F ebruary 8,2018 theifp.ca The Grade 5/6 class at the Halton Hills Christian School in Georgetown has been working very hard to plan a benefit concert in an effort to raise money to help bring an Eritrean ref- ugee to Canada. The Beyond Ourselves initiative is part of the school's project-based learning, which requires each class in the school to take on a large project and answer the question of how they, as difference makers, can help someone in need. The Christian Re- formed Church in George- town spearheaded the fundraising initiative af- ter the plight of an Eritre- an refugee was brought to the attention of one of their members, Linda De Boer, who is also the sec- retary at HHCS. Aaron (a moniker pro- vided due to privacy pur- poses), a young man from the war torn country of Eritrea, which is located in the Horn of Africa, is currently a migrant living in Israel but he is facing deportation. Thus, he is seeking asy- lum in Canada, and after a family member of De Boer's met Aaron and brought his story to their attention, a fundraising initiative was spearhead- ed by the church, and in turn, the students at the neighbouring school HHCS. "He has a brother named Dan who also hopes to come to Canada eventually, but sadly, they do not have enough money to even come, so that's where we come in," said Grade 5 student Ryka Abramson. "To help raise the $23,000 that is needed to sponsor Aaron, we are organizing a benefit con- cert." The entire class has been enlisted in the efforts to determine location and logistics, working as audi- tion organizers, advertis- ing the event, finding ven- dors and all of the other details that go into plan- ning such a large event. The auditions are being opened up to current stu- dents, alumni, as well as WHAT'S ON Halton Hills Christian School hosting benefit concert for Eritrean refugee DANIELLE MARR dmarr@caledonenterprise.com l See INITIATIVE, page 42 Our Trails are open all year round!
