Community services librarian Lee Puddephatt says though the library plans topical programming each year to celebrate women, this year, the series features three very specific topics that have a broad reach. The series kicks off on March 6, where the Georgetown branch is hosting Dil- shad Tavawalla, a Canadian family and child protection lawyer. Tavawalla will be giving a talk on fe- male genital mutilation entitled Taboos and Traditions - a topic that, while typ- ically associated with developing coun- tries, affects women globally, with many in Canada as well, Puddephatt said. The talk, sponsored by the Canadian Federation of University Women, will be followed by the screening of Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, a film on the life and work of actor and inventor Hedy La- marr, on March 20, as part of the John Elliott Theatre's OnScreen program- ming. The final item for International Wom- en's Day is part of the Halton Hills Lec- ture Series and will take place on March 21. Aptly called Has Feminism Succeed- ed, the lecture will primarily touch upon issues of women's rights and workplace inequality. Puddephatt says she hopes this type of programming challenges the idea of where we are globally with regards to women's issues. "I think the big take-away is that we are not done and we need to communi- cate in a community hub, such as the li- brary, and share those ideas so we don't ever become stagnant and we keep mov- ing forward for human rights," she add- ed. "Just because we live in a privileged first-world society, it doesn't mean we shouldn't constantly seek out better- ment for ourselves. Being where we are and having a community that's so edu- cated and so involved, it's really impor- tant that we continue to pay attention to these kinds of issues."
