Halton Hills tyke #1 Thunder photo Fifth-year centre Se- bastian Beckett is looking to close out his fine uni- versity basketball career as a key member of the McGill Redmen with a na- tional championship this coming weekend in Hali- fax. The six-foot-six, 226- pound Georgetown Dis- trict High School gradu- ate had 13 points and six rebounds for the Redmen in their 98-79 trouncing of Concordia on Saturday night for the Montreal school's third straight RSEQ (Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec) league title and fifth in the past six years. McGill is ranked third heading into this week- end's eight-team U SPORT men's basketball champi- onships at Acadia Univer- sity and will take on sixth- seeded University of New Brunswick in Thursday's opening game at 11 a.m. Beckett, an economics and computer sciences major, earned Academic All-Canadian status and is a member of the Princi- pal's Student-Athlete Ho- nour Roll. The Georgetown native started 15 of 16 games for the Redmen this season, averaging 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per outing. Beckett has taken a leadership role volunteer- ing his time in numerous projects including the McGill Varsity Sports Council food drives and gift-wrapping sessions that benefit Sun Youth, a Montreal-based organiza- tion that provides servic- es to needy and under- privileged families. For those efforts, he re- ceived the RSEQ confer- ence award for combining leadership, academics and citizenship. The Redmen posted an overall record of 25-10 this season, playing against several NCAA teams in exhibition action. With seven seniors in the line- up, McGill will need all of its cylinders firing in or- der to defeat the number- one-ranked Carlton Ra- vens, who are looking to win an unprecedented eighth straight U SPORTS men's hoops title.
