The Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan (SNAP) is a project that CVC has adopted from the Toronto Conservation Authority, and first employed it in 2016 at Fletcher's Creek in Peel. "Each SNAP is unique," said Karen Ban- nister, senior co-ordinator for sustainable neighbourhoods with Credit Valley Con- servation. "Since the project has started, we've already started to see change in the neighbourhood." The objective of a SNAP is to involve the community in helping to preserve and re- store healthy ecosystems in sensitive areas surrounded by houses and developments. "Georgetown is home to this large and unique biodiversity hot spot," said Bannis- ter, explaining that Halton Hills is a perfect municipality to introduce this initiative, explaining that both the community is en- thusiastic about environmental preserva- tion, and there is over 834 hectares of valu- able natural habitat that stretches from Black Creek to Silver Creek, across Halton Hills. "We have a community that's very close to this natural environment," she said, ex- plaining that the project would focus specif- ically on the Hungry Hollow area because of its proximity to housing. The project is yet to establish the exact boundaries of the focus area. Once put into action, the CVC would work with community volunteers to im- prove the health of the natural habitat around Hungry Hollow through various initiatives like storm water management, reforestation and energy efficient retrofit- ting. "We would like to get the town's endorse- ment of the project," she said. "What we're looking for is to establish a partnership." CVC has submitted a proposal to the Hal- ton Hills Sustainability Implementation Committee, who are seeking more informa- tion about the project before they bring it to council to request funding. The conservation authority is request- ing a $10,000 contribution from the town in order to help get the project off the ground. Members of the committee voiced con- cerns about how much funding would be re- quested at a later point in the multi-year program. "They're really at the initial steps," said Gabriel Clarke, the town's manager of sus- tainability and climate change. "In terms of an overall funding commitment, I can't tell you what that's going to be at this point." The committee directed Clarke to come back at the next meeting with a clear projec- tion of what would be expected of the town. "I hope to see this succeed," said Clarke. "It's a good way for the community to get ex- cited about the environment and effect pos- itive change."
