Husband for 63 years to Eileen (née Wylie). Loving father of Karen Stadnyk (Andy) of Nova Scotia, Steve Bashak (Sheree) of Brampton, Colleen Darling (Paul) of Georgetown, Leslie Schwarzl (Sandy Brown) of Orangeville and Sue Brandt (Scott) of Georgetown. Proud Grampa "Poppa" to Alex, Athena, Kelly, Chris, Michael, Craig, Steve, Jenny, Jeff, Katie, Maggie, Kevin, Colleen and Abby. Great-grandfather to Austin, Hannah, and newborn Jed. Walter was born and raised in the shadows of Hamilton's Civic Stadium. An athlete in his youth, Walter won two Dominion Championships with the Hamilton Wildcat junior team. A McMaster University grad, Walter played football for the Marauders before moving to the professional ranks with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He was also a long- time employee of Sears Canada. In retirement, Walter, an avid Tiger-Cat season ticket holder, enjoyed woodworking, gifting his children and grandchildren with lasting mementos of his hobby. A member of Niagara area duplicate bridge clubs, Walter spent many happy hours competing with the friends he met there. Son of Nicholas and Nellie (née Pawlick) Bashak, Walter was an only child whose greatest achievement and love was being the poppa and great poppa to his ever expanding family with hopes of meeting another Darling baby in July. Karl was born in Germany, and became a citizen of Canada after arriving in the port of Halifax in 1952. Karl's passion for discovering the world led him to many destinations, where he developed his skills in photography and languages. His love for horticulture and all things green lured him across Canada to Victoria's Butchart Gardens and eventually back to Ontario, where he settled in the town of Georgetown. Here he ra i sed a fami ly whi le contributing his expertise to the beautiful gardens of the Dominion Seed House. He is remembered for his clever sense of humor, kind nature, and uncanny ability to see those l i tt le but very important things in life.
