Platinum 2017 Halton Hills It's that time of year again for Halton residents to make sure their homes are property protected from any potential flooding caused by melted snow, or abundant rainfall. Halton Region lists three types of basement flooding to be aware of - and tips to make sure it doesn't happen to you. Storm water flooding This occurs when storm water pools around your home and is able to enter your basement through any cracks in the foundation. Some things to look out for: • Check for cracks in walls and floors • Make sure the ground outside your home slopes away from it and that there are no outdoor structures (gardens, etc.) causing the water to pool • Make sure your eaves troughs are clean and clear of any potential blockages and that water is being prop- erly drained two metres away from your home Wastewater backup flooding This type of flooding is of- ten caused by a clog in the sewer lateral, which is the pipe connecting your home to the main sewer line. Some things to note: • Have your lateral in- spected (if you live in an old- er home, tree roots could be apotential cause for a block- age) • Watch what you pour down the drain (grease and fats are a no-no) Combination flooding This is the most common type of flooding in the re- gion. It occurs when both the storm water and waste- water systems are backed up due to large amounts of water (often caused by melt- ed snow and abundance of rainfall in the springtime). Some tips to consider: • Make sure the ground outside your home slopes away from it • Ensure downspouts, sump pumps, window well drains and driveway drains are disconnected from the wastewater system • Disconnect your weep- ing tile from the wastewater system (if it is connected), and install a sump pump in- stead • Install a backwater valve on the wastewater pipe located in your base- ment. • Regularly inspect any flood prevention devices Halon residents may also be eligible for the region's Enhanced Basement Flood- ing Prevention Subsidy Pro- gram, which provides finan- cial aid for the following measures: downspout dis- connection, weeping tile disconnection and sump pump installation, backwa- ter valve Installation, and sewer lateral lining and re- pair.
