Ontario Provincial Police, in collabora- tion with participating municipal police services, is holding a gun amnesty during the month of April. The amnesty is for any Ontario resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender un- wanted or illegally-owned firearms, weap- ons, accessories or ammunition. "The amnesty is a way to provide citi- zens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety. During the am- nesty, police will not recommend weap- ons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items," stated an OPP press release. Police note however that no amnesty is offered to people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. Also, no anonymous submissions will be accepted. Gun owners in Halton can call the OPP non-emergency number (1-888-310-1122) to arrange for officers to retrieve the weap- ons, or Halton police at 905-634-1831. Citizens also can use the OPP website (www.opp.ca/gunamnesty) or the Citizen Self Reporting tool to notify police. The OPP stresses that no one should bring guns or ammunition directly to po- lice facilities. "Ontario has seen an increase in break- and-enter incidents where firearms are stolen or targeted by criminals.
