29| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,A pril 19,2018 theifp.ca For those people who still aren't getting the message about distracted driving, Halton Re- gional Police Service are turning the tables with some surrepti- tious tactics to enforce the laws. During the month of March, 10 officers in the force's one district response unit (DRU) in Halton Hills and Milton focussed on catching in the act those multi- tasking motorists who just can't wait to send that text or make a phone call while on the road. As of Sunday, the DRU has laid more than 100 distracted-driving charges in North Halton so far this month. An Independent & Free Press reporter rode along with Const. Scott Stevenson on a Thursday afternoon for a couple of hours in a sleek, stealthy ride that does not resemble any typical un- marked police vehicle. During the patrol throughout Halton Hills, Const. Stevenson is- sued three tickets for distracted driving, with all three offences taking place while the vehicles were stopped at a red light. "It's quite a shock to them when they see the police lights come on," he said. "I like the ones where you have (a driver) sitting there at a light texting, and you've made obser- vations for a good 20 to 30 sec- onds. When you pull them over, they say, 'I just grabbed it from falling off the dashboard,' or 'I had to text my kids to see if they're OK.' Well, you can pull over and do that at the side of the road. Believe it or not, there are still people who don't know that you can't use your phone while stopped at a red light." The DRU deploys three non- traditional police vehicles for en- forcement and has used some other crafty methods to catch those motorists whose attention is on their phones and not the roadway, such as officers dis- guised as panhandlers at busy in- tersections. Paul Rudall asked that descriptions and images of the unmarked vehicles not be used with this article, while con- POLICE AND FIRE Police go undercover to nab distracted drivers in Halton Hills EAMONN MAHER emaher@theifp.ca l See POLICE, page 30 Movers and Shakers Marketplace Movers and ShakersMovers and Shakers Your Best Choice For Bin Rentals 6 - 40 cu. yd, sizes available A Family Tradition since 1953! .sandersondisposal.ca 519-833-2614 kind same day service SpoSal CONTAINER SERVICES BIN RENTAL (905) 873-7955 CARPET, FLOORING & RUGS Est.1993 www.CarpetPalace.ca OVER 3,000 GEORGETOWN HOMES SERVICED! 3 ADAMSON ST. Professional Arts Building 99 Sinclair Ave., Suite 210, Georgetown 905-873-6642 Serving the community of Halton Hills and surrounding areas since 1992 The Georgetown Members of the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners of Ontario recommend a 30 day time period in which they may return their hearing aid(s) if they are not completely satisfied. (There may be a service fee charged if an aid is returned). The criteria for satisfaction of the hearing aids is that you find them beneficial. You have the final word. CAN I HAVE A TRIAL PERIOD! WHAT SHOULD yOU EXPECT FROM HEARING INSTRUMENTS! PART 2 * Understanding speech is a brain function and although the hearing instruments will give your brain the tools it needs to understand speech, it takes training and patience to improve your ability to understand. * Different listening situations will offer different abilities to understanding. Noisy situations are harder to hear conversation even for normal hearing individuals; hearing instruments should improve your ability, but will not allow you to perform as a normal hearing individual. * Many sounds that you hear will sound different, or more distinct, to you. This is because your diminished hearing over a long period of time has trained your brain to accept the slight differences in the sounds you normally hear. Wearing hearing instruments will bring back the original sounds as they should be heard, although different to you. With time your brain will accept the new changes to these sounds. * Hearing instruments should allow you to understand speech better in most situations than without your hearing instruments.
