The Fergus resident has spent the last 20 years teaching across the region, in- cluding early-career postings at Georgetown High School and Acton High School. "I know how to listen to the needs of people," said Ballan- tyne. In her early years as a teacher, Ballantyne was men- tored by longtime English teacher Moe Leeking at George- town High School, and later Co- lin Bain, at Acton High School. She has experience as a department head for Ca- nadian and world studies and has worked hard over the years to connect with her community. "I work with young people every single day and I see the gaps in services for mental health," she said. "They're extremely troubling." For these reasons, she says she is excited to help champion the NDP platform and solidify quality so- cial services in Ontario. "I'm a person who follows through," she said. Ballantyne will square off against Jon Hurst, Dave Rodgers and Ted Arnott in upcoming all-can- didates meetings before the June 7 election. PROVINCIAL ELECTION Diane Ballantyne is the Wellington-Halton Hills NDP candidate ALEXANDRA HECK aheck@metroland.com Diane Ballantyne The students from Silver Creek Public School's crochet club only had 20 minutes each week to work on the project, but they were determined to com- plete it. Led by teacher librarian Elizabeth Cook, a num- ber of students from grades 3 through 8 began cro- cheting back in September. It has almost been a full school year, but this week, they have something to show for it: a cosy white and purple quilt that will help Halton Hills raise money for ALS. The quilt will be entered in a silent auction as part of the 10th annual Halton Hills Walk for ALS, which will take place on June 9. "The money raised from this quilt will go toward those with ALS and also toward research," Mary Jo Knox, Walk for ALS co-ordinator told the students on April 17. "'One day, we are hopeful, that there will be a cure for ALS and you will have each played a part in that." The 2018 Walk for ALS will begin at 161 Guelph St., Georgetown, ON, on June 9, with registration at 9 a.m. For more information, visit http://walk- forals.ca/. We know it is real; it is a symptom that something is wrong in the auditory system, but we do not know what that something is. We do know that it is not the patients imagination; it is a physiological or neurological event. There is reason to be hopeful because current research using a Tinnitus model may provide the necessary information for identifying it's cause. IS IT ASSOCIATED WITH HEARING LOSS? In most cases, Tinnitus is associated with some hearing loss. For example, those who have been exposed to excessively loud sounds may have a hearing loss for the high pitched tones. Usually their Tinnitus will be located as a high pitched tone in the region of the hearing loss. In some cases Tinnitus is present where there is no hearing loss and for no discernable reason.
