He began building the frame jig for the coupe in February 2006 and for someone who was never in- terested in becoming a me- chanic, its pieces came to- gether over the course of the next decade. From the upholstery for the bench seats to the wiring, the chassis, right down to the knobs on the high-end ste- reo system, they were all put together by Hender- son. He did enlist the help of others for a couple of the car's components, includ- ing a U.S. company to com- plete the 525-horsepower engine block and a de- ceased friend who created the flames. "I've got a lot of friends who I talk to who are into cars for their opinions and I always have my ideas too. You build it how you want to build it because it's your dream, right? I learned a lot, made some mistakes, but it's all been worth it." The car first hit the road in August 2016 and the Hen- dersons put up 3,000 kilo- metres last year, with the foot-long hotdogs at Rocky's Drive-In in Guelph reason enough to take it out for a spin on a nice day. But the coupe is earning plenty of accolades on the show circuit for its one-of-a- kind design features. It won the Best Engineered Street Rod and the Best in Class awards for the Custom Rod Coupe category (1936-47) at the biggest show of the year in Canada - Motorama at the International Centre in Mis- sissauga in March - easily the highlight so far for Hen- derson. He joined fellow Halton Hills residents Jamie Watt with his 1956 Volkswagen oval window Beetle and Dave Jolly's 1938 Lincoln Zephyr among the 28 vehi- cles selected to show in the prestigious Grand Room at Motorama. "You really couldn't give me anything better than that, to be recognized for the building of the car," he said proudly. "We were just honoured to be there and I kept say- ing to Flo, 'I almost feel I shouldn't be here. These guys are so good at build- ing their cars.' Then one of the judges told me he hadn't seen anything like it, and that the underside of the car was just as beauti- ful as the outside. That was pretty rewarding to hear." Henderson has also been profiled for an up- coming issue of Hot Rod Magazine. SPORTS l Continued from page 35 A decade to build, hot rod receiving accolades
