Graham Paine/Metroland EAMONN MAHER emaher@theifp.ca The Halton Hills Minor Football Association (HHMFA) has connected with athletic apparel giant Under Armour for a new flag football league for kids on Friday eve- nings in Georgetown that gets underway this week. Under the Lights Youth Flag Football is a noncontact, six-on-six shootout-style ver- sion of the sport played across the width of Kiwanis Field at Georgetown District High School. There are four age groups: kindergarten to Grade 2, grades 3-4, grades 5-6 and grades 7-8. Each of the nine partici- pants per team receive an Un- der Armour T-shirt and shorts. The coaches are vol- unteer s. Teams first have a 45- minute practice and then play the game. Late registrations are still being accepted. The HHMFA did have an informal flag football league for the tyke age group last year but president Jonathan Nedeljkovic explained that Under Armour's Under the Lights program has caught on with many minor football organizations in Canada. "We foresaw a year ago with the decline in registra- tion (for tackle football) that bringing in an alternative was in my mindset," he said. "The last couple of years we've seen six-aside football, which I absolutely believe is a very smart way to progress kids at the atom or peewee ag- es to play football. Until you're at least 12 or 13, you should be playing flag football if you do want to progress into tackle football, you should start at maybe 10 or 11, but only six aside. It's been a successful program in Saskatchewan. The kids love it and they've had a very small number of injuries." Georgetown schools have enjoyed success in organized flag football tournaments over the past couple of years, including the Centennial Public School Chargers at the elementary level and Christ the King's girls' team won a big tournament at Hamilton's McMaster University late last month.
