Wellington-Halton Hills pro- testers stood outside MP Mi- chael Chong's office today, clad in red, urging him to stand with them in taking action against climate change. The group met on June 4 in Fergus, Ont., to read aloud a let- ter they will be presenting to Chong in an effort to gain his as- sistance in their peaceful pro- test against the federal Liberals' May 29 decision to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline for $4.5 billion. "Today we are coming to- gether to make sure that MPs from every party know that Ca- nadians are outraged at the buyout of Kinder Morgan," said Erin resident Liz Armstrong, of Citizens' Climate Lobby Cana- da. "We all know that, from all of the science, we have to stop bringing oil, especially bitu- men, out of the tarsands if we are going to meet our promise made in Paris in 2015 to work with the world to reduce the risk of climate change." Armstrong earlier expressed her concern in a news release, saying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is irresponsibly using billions of taxpayer dollars that could be going toward schools, hospitals, First Nations com- munities and supporting re- newable energy initiatives and jobs nationwide. "Even people who don't pay much attention to politics will say that's a big waste of money. We really need to be thinking to- wards the future," she added. The two-page letter men- tions Chong's previous stance on climate change and carbon pricing, and asks him to be an ally. "We appreciate your help in persuading your federal col- leagues to have the gumption to lead the world in climate action so our kids and grandchildren will have a livable future," the letter concludes. Chong told the Independent in a statement that he is op- posed to the Liberals' decision, which he says is costing taxpay- ers billions of dollars that could have been spent fixing congest- ed roads, bridges and transit systems. Chong added that the pur- chase price also does not in- clude the construction cost of the new pipeline. "The Liberal government not only mismanaged the regulato- ry process for the Trans Moun- tain pipeline, they vetoed the approved Northern Gateway pipeline and killed the Energy East pipeline with last minute rule changes and a regulatory standard that does not apply to any other sector of the Canadi- an economy," Chong said. "Their decisions have dam- aged investor confidence and forced companies to reconsider future projects. This has result- ed in the loss of thousands of private sector jobs and billions in private sector investment." He added: "Climate change is one of the great challenges of our times. But the right way to reduce emissions is to properly price carbon, use the revenues to cut income taxes and let the free markets and the private sector do the rest." The Fergus protest was one of dozens taking place across Canada as part of a national day of action to stop the Kinder Morgan buyout.
