5| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,June 7,2018 theifp.ca A 20-year-old Toronto man led Halton police on a lengthy chase Sunday morning before being ar- rested in Acton with the as- sistance of the canine unit. Officers responded to a call from an attendant at the Esso gas station at Highway 7 and 22 Sideroad at approximately 5:30 a.m. Sunday indicating that a male had just used a stolen credit card to purchase sev- eral hundred dollars in gift cards and had left in a vehi- cle driving toward Acton. Police were provided with the licence plate num- ber of the vehicle, which had been reported stolen in Durham Region. An officer located the suspect vehicle parked in front of the Shell gas sta- tion on Queen Street near Acton Boulevard and ob- served the male suspect in the kiosk. After a brief con- frontation, the male fled on foot and police set up a pe- rimeter, awaiting the arriv- al of the canine unit. An off-duty Halton offi- cer who had just completed his night shift was on his way home and observed the male in a residential ar- ea south of the Shell sta- tion. The suspect fled again, running through backyards into a forested area bordered by train tracks. As police continued to search for the suspect, a homeowner called 911 to re- port a suspicious male on his rural property who had asked him to call a taxi. Of- ficers converged on this ar- ea and again the male fled into a crop field. The male was observed by officers crawling in the low growth and was confronted by the canine unit. He was arrest- ed without incident, how- ever, was found to have had a fixed blade knife con- cealed in his waistband. Further investigation revealed that the male had entered several vehicles while on the run from po- lice in a likely attempt to steal one and make his es- cape. Police are asking area residents to report if their vehicle had been entered on this date and to contact police if they locate any dis- carded property in and around their homes. The suspect was in cus- tody on Monday morning awaiting a bail hearing on a slew of charges, including possession over $5,000, theft under $5,000, posses- sion of a weapon for a dan- gerous purpose, obstruct and breach probation.
