TEE TIMETEE TIMETEE TIME OSHAWA - More than six weeks after announcing Bob Jones would not be back as head coach, and after an ex- haustive search, the Oshawa Generals introduced Greg Walters as the new bench boss of the storied Ontario Hockey League franchise June 11. Walters, who has guided the Georgetown Raiders to a remarkable 295-96-16-16 regu- lar season record and won two coach of the year awards over the past eight seasons in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, said he was thrilled to be able to take the next step forward without sacrificing his family life. "My two boys are very, very important to me," he said of Dawson, 18, and Dylin, 13, who both play high-level baseball with the Ontario Blue Jays. "I've had other op- portunities to go within the OHL, but I didn't want to move away from them, so when this job opened up, it's just a perfect fit for myself and my family." Walters will take over the reins from Jones, who could not come to an agreement on a contract extension after missing the entire 2017-18 sea- son recovering from a burst colon. Greg Nemisz and Na- than McIver, who worked with general manager Roger Hunt to fill the void last sea- son, will remain with the team as assistants to Walters. In the past three seasons since winning the 2015 Memo- rial Cup with D.J. Smith as coach, the Generals im- proved from 27-33-4-4 to 40-23- 3-2 under Jones before slip- ping back to 36-29-3-0 last sea- son. The Generals' roster ap- pears poised for a break- through over the next season or two, making this hire very important to Hunt. "I think we've positioned ourselves into a good spot, but there's more than one team that feels they're in that posi- tion," Hunt said following a Monday news conference in the Generals' dressing room. "We'll be on a collision course with a few teams in the east that are probably a similar makeup to where we are at, so it's going to come down to a re- al solid job by our coaching staff led by Greg." Walters, 47, was a fourth- round draft pick of the Toron- to Maple Leafs in 1990, but never reached the National Hockey League. He was an as- sistant coach with the OHL's Sarnia Sting for eight years before joining the Raiders, where he served as head coach and GM. "I'm extremely passionate about our players," said Wal- ters, who separated himself from candidates as high as current NHL assistant coach- es, according to Hunt. "I'm a players' coach, they'll know that, but I'm also very loud and demanding. We will be a defence-first team. Our best players will be our best defen- sive players, they'll block shots, but they'll also be very explosive once we get the puck and will create a lot of of- fence." Captain Juck Studnicka, one of a handful of players on the team who attended the news conference, said he had a great relationship with Jones, but is excited to move forward under Walters. "He was well-liked by our guys but the situation is what it is, and moving forward, we're comfortable with all three guys that are going to be on the bench next year," said Studnicka, a second-round draft pick of the Boston Bru- ins. "I've heard nothing but good things about Greg and look forward to working with him." The marathon golfers are (from left) Joey Chua, Dave Belletrutti, Cory McLaughlin and Matt Tindale. Having broken the record for number of holes played in the annual Longest Day of Golf fundraising event for the Georgetown Hospital Foundation, the conquering foursome has already made plans to do it again next year. The club's professional golf staff teed off at 6 a.m. Monday and finished up at about 9:15 p.m., squeezing in 10 full rounds (180 holes) to beat the previous record of 150 set last year. The group set a fundraising total of $3,000 and while the final tally hasn't been made as of Tuesday morning, assistant pro Tindale figures it will be around the $5,000 range. Proceeds are set to go toward the purchase of a vital signs monitor for the local hospital's Complex Continuing Care Unit.Eamonn Maher photo
