The final tally is in and the annual Relay for Life fundraiser recently held at Georgetown District High School generated just over $31,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Grade 9 student Kathryn Stewart set the tone for the 12-hour event with an emo- tional motivating speech just before the festivities be- gan on Kiwanis Field. Stewart, 14, has battled neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nervous system in young children, for the past decade. Relay organizers pre- sented Stewart with a cheque for $6,260 to go to- ward a family trip to Prince Edward Island this summer. "We went when I was four years old and had a great time," she said. "I can't wait to see the red sand again." The remainder of the funds raised has been donat- ed to the Canadian Cancer Society in Stewart's name and she will choose the char- itable destination for that money. In the six years that the Relay for Life has been held at GDHS, a total of approxi- mately $250,000 has been raised. Stewart will play host to her second-annual Kath- ryn's Krop for a Kure on Sat- urday, Sept. 29, which is a scrapbooking fundraiser for the Hospital for Sick Chil- dren.
