Please don't drink and drive or boat! The nomination period to sign up as a contender in the Oct. 22 municipal elec- tion has closed. In the final hours, four new candidates in Halton Hills submitted their paper- work, bringing the number of candidates in the race to 24 people. Mayor Rick Bonnette will be looking to keep his position, running against James Waldbusser and Robert Gottardi. Some positions, like regional council- lor for wards 1 and 2, remain uncontested, with Clark Somerville the only candidate. Other wards, like 3 and 4, are hotly con- tested with five and six applicants respec- tively. The four last-minute applicants for the race included Mark Lockwood, who is running against Jane Fogal and John Cooke for regional councillor of wards 3 and 4. Abe Verghis filed on July 27 for a Ward 4 council position, and Denis Frawley ap- plied to be a school board representative for Conseil scolaire Viamonde. In the final day before closing, Anne Marsden filed to run against regional chair Gary Carr. Marsden has run for the position of mayor in Burlington during previous elec- tions. The IFP will continue to profile candi- dates in the coming weeks, for a full list of applicants visit the town of Halton Hills website.
