More than 200 players had tried out for the 17U team, and Ellis and Mac- Neil were two of eight pitchers selected from across the province. It was a huge milestone for the boys, who have been playing ball together for years. But there was no time for celebrations. That very same day, the two teammates were heading off to Cleveland to play a game with their Ontario Terriers Club team. And that's not the only other baseball gig on their plate. In addition to play- ing for the Ontario Terri- ers and for 17U Team On- tario, both pitchers have jobs as umpires and have played for the Ontario- based Team Canada that competed in Oklahoma this past June. That's how life is for the pair aspiring to be Ma- jor League Baseball pitch- ers - and they wouldn't have it any other way. "Right now, it's pretty much baseball every day," Ellis, 16, said, adding that the majority of his time this summer has been spent practising, playing and working out. "I feel like our lifestyles are different from other people's because of how busy we are, so it's kind of less hanging out, less vid- eo games -- less stuff like that and more serious baseball stuff." In addition to their busy schedules, MacNeil says, the boys' baseball ca- reers require them not on- ly to have a killer arm, but to be well-rounded indi- viduals both on and off the field. "It takes everything," the 17-year-old said. "You have to eat right, you have to work out however many times a week, and you have to keep your grades up, just to have the chance to go on. But you've cho- sen it, so you've got to have a passion for the game that no one else has, to re- ally want to go forward with it." As well, a player's atti- tude plays a vital role in their success - a tip Mac- Neil says he tries to keep in mind at all times. "As my coach would say, whether you're win- ning by 10, losing by 10 or it's 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, you've got to keep the same attitude towards everything," he said. Ellis and MacNeil will be flying out to Moncton, N.B., on Aug. 7 for the Na- tional Championship Canada Cup and say they are excited for the expo- sure this tournament will bring. "There will be a lot of people watching, and I just want to kind of show off what we've got," Ellis said. "It's a new feeling, but it's definitely a good feeling, because we know that it's the best of the best in Ontario and you are playing the best people possible. It's just a good feeling knowing that you have the support of so many people, and it's go- ing to be fun watching ev- eryone play."
