The first, Halton council blasts Pearson reps for overhead flight noise, was on the front page of the July 19 issue of the Inde- pendent, and the other was an article, Feds fund noise- reduction research to help whales, published in the Toronto Star two days lat- er. As revealed in the Star article, the federal govern- ment will be spending $26.6 million for "research that will help identify how to re- duce the impacts of noise stressors on whales and other marine species." I am glad this money is being spent on the preser- vation and protection of our fellow creatures. How- ever, I believe that the com- munities living below the flight paths of planes de- parting and landing at To- ronto Pearson Internation- al Airport deserve the same consideration. As a resident of south Georgetown who lives ad- jacent to Miller Drive Park, I am both amazed and alarmed at the frequency of flights that cross the park and how low they fly. Not only are the flights heard throughout the day, but al- so regularly during the "nighttime curfew,"which runs between 12:30 and 6:30 a.m. That piercing, high- pitched whistle of the large planes is indeed a "noise stressor." I have no hard statistics on the number of flights crossing our neigh- bourhood. However, I do know that the frequency is sometimes less than a min- ute between flights. If you go on Google Earth and search for Miller Drive Park you will see a plane in the screenshot about to cross the park on the very popular south- west flight path. I believe that a big part of the prob- lem is that flight elevations are based on Pearson air- port, which is significantly lower than that of Halton Hills. This elevation differ- ence needs to be addressed. I am glad that our elect- ed officials are pressing the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) for greater accountability for the impacts their planes are having throughout the region. However, noise is only one of the impacts to the community. Air quality should also be considered to fully as- sess the overall impact to our quality of life. If we are to hold the GTAA accountable, I be- lieve that flight noise and air quality data should be obtained and monitored by a truly independent body. No funds? Well, perhaps we can reach out to the fed- eral government, which is so very wisely providing researching funding to re- duce negative impacts to our fellow creatures. DAVID ORSINI ALTERED EXHAUSTS 'FAR MORE DISTURBING' THAN AIRPLANE NOISE RE: Halton council blasts Pearson reps for overhead flight noise I was amazed to see that council is disturbed by dis- cussing aircraft noise. A far more disturbing noise is made by vehicles with al- tered exhausts, producing ear-splitting noise in town. There are now several of these vehicles driving around causing deafening noise, especially at night. In my opinion - and by com- parison - an aircraft flying thousands of feet overhead is hardly noticeable. Can we hope to see some police action on these ille- gal exhausts?
