Halton Region Public Health are warning residents about protecting themselves about mosquito bites after testing mosquitoes in Mil- ton, which have come back positive for the vi- rus. This comes after tests of mosquitoes in Bur- lington and Oakville have come back positive this year. "Halton is committed to being safe and healthy and reducing West Nile virus in our communities through both education and pre- ventive programs like larviciding," said Dr. Daniela Kempkens, the region's associate med- ical officer of health. Public Health Ontario reports that only 20 per cent of people infected with West Nile virus show symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue, while more severe symptoms can lead to vomiting and nausea. One per cent of those infected exhibit severe symptoms that impair the central nervous sys- tem, which can lead to paralysis and comas. Kempkens urges residents to cover up, pro- tect themselves against bites and remove standing water that mosquitoes breed in. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe: Cover up by wearing long sleeves and pants with light coloured fabric. Avoid exposing yourself in the early morn- ing, when mosquitoes are most likely to be out and biting. Use insect repellents containing DEET or lcaridin.
