35| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,A ugust 30,2018 theifp.ca On Sunday, Sept. 16, the 38th annual Terry Fox Run takes place in Georgetown at the Gellert Centre in Georgetown South, and in Acton at the Acton High School track. In Georgetown, the run takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., when joggers, walk- ers, rollers, kids and fami- lies can participate in a 750- metre fun loop, while the more serious runners can take advantage of a five-ki- lometre loop. There will be free Domi- no's pizza and Terra Cotta cookies, a raffle, and a si- lent auction featuring products and services from local businesses. Since 1981, the Georgetown run has raised $393,000 and has the opportunity to push past the $400,000 mark this year. In July, run organizer Stephen Dame and his son Conrad followed Terry's route from Georgetown to Thunder Bay. Conrad took some dirt from the spot where Terry took his final step on the Marathon of Hope. That dirt will be placed across the start/fin- ish line at the Gellert Cen- tre. In Acton, participants can arrive any time be- tween 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., to walk, run or cycle some or all of the 25 laps around the high school rubberized track. The official opening ceremonies will take place at 8 a.m., with Mayor Rick Bonnette on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon along- side Miss Acton Fall Fair and other dignitaries. A food booth will again be on site, with all food do- nated by local businesses, and all funds raised going directly to the cause. Terry Fox memorabilia will be on display, and Ter- ry Fox T-shirts will also be available for purchase. Interestingly, I also trav- elled to Thunder Bay last winter, where I met with my son and two grandchil- dren from Manitoba. Our goal was to visit the Terry Fox monument that is lo- cated on the southern out- skirts of Thunder Bay, high on a rock-faced cliff over- looking the Trans-Canada Highway and Lake Superi- or. It is a breathtakingly beautiful location, and a heartwarming recognition and commemoration of Terry and his legacy. We also travelled on the highway to the location, a short distance to the south, where Terry's final step on his Marathon of Hope is marked by a sign located on both sides of the highway. As run organizers, both Stephen and I understand the obligation we have to share Terry's story - one of courage and determina- tion - with our children and grandchildren, to ensure that Terry's sacrifice and accomplishments will nev- er be forgotten. Please join us to help keep Terry's dream alive. For more information or to register, visit www.ter- ryfox.org. Participants can also register at the Acton and Georgetown run sites, where supporters can also pledge local participants. Pledges can be collected online. Pledge forms are available at a variety of re- tail locations in town.
