5| The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,A ugust 30,2018 theifp.ca Two motorists were ar- rested for alleged stunt driving and a total of 160 charges were laid overall Friday, Aug. 24, when Hal- ton police were joined by a total of 20 officers from Peel, York, Toronto, the OPP and the Ministry of the Environment, Conser- vation and Parks for a street racing and aggres- sive driving blitz. The officers were divid- ed equally among three Halton police districts to patrol in partnership with Halton officers. This was the fourth such collaborative effort to take place in the GTA this year by officers who work on Project E.R.A.S.E. (which aims to Eradicate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere). Previously, Halton offi- cers have supported York, Peel and the OPP by assist- ing them in similar pro- jects in their jurisdictions. Officers were support- ed by staff from the re- spective district response units, whose job it is to tar- get aggressive driving in Burlington, Oakville, Mil- ton and Halton Hills. Halton police would like to publicly thank its GTA partners for working with us and continuing to combat illegal racing ac- tivity on the roads within the GTA. As with impaired driv- ers, it is important that our communities feel con- fident to call the police and report illegal racing and dangerous operation of motor vehicles when they observe it. Each year a number of tragic inci- dents occur in the GTA where people lose their lives while engaging in il- legal racing activities on public streets. Our mes- sage will remain, "If you want to race, take it to the track." The Halton Regional Police Service remains committed to road safety through prevention, edu- cation and enforcement initiatives. Members of the public are reminded that driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is a crime in progress and to call 911 immediately to re- port a suspected impaired driver. The service's Twitter and Facebook accounts should not be used for this purpose as they are not monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
