The pair, who met later in life, formed a blended family with their four chil- dren - Vaters' two daugh- ters, and Robynne's two sons Jordan and Nic Spence. "He embraced all of us as a family," said Nic. "He had a want and the need to see everyone in his life suc- ceeding." Vaters and wife devoted much of their spare time to renovating a cottage on Ril- ey Lake in Gravenhurst. "He just loved the cot- tage," said Robynne. "He had a huge group of friends up there." Friends like Kelly and Mark Winterburn, who re- member themed parties and evenings that Vaters held. "He made everything fun," she said, remember- ing how he prepared a min- iature theatre setting at the cottage one night to watch videos of the 1972 Summit Series with friends. Mark and Vaters were always working on pro- jects at each other's proper- ties. "When I didn't have a good idea, Keith had a bet- ter one," Mark said. Vaters' longtime friend Derek Hedley started working for Asbuilt years ago, and also spent a great deal of time up at the cot- tage. "It's like family, the com- pany, really," said Hedley, noting that Vaters would work to keep staff busy during slow seasons in or- der to keep his staff work- ing full hours. The Vaters family will continue on Asbuilt Com- fort Care. Vaters died in a utility terrain vehicle accident in Gravenhurst on Sept. 18, 2018. He was 58 years old.
