Tony Fortunato/photo SNAPSHOT A different perspective on an annual tradition has inspired the Georgetown Lions Club's latest effort to give back to the community. A Lions Club member who plays a prominent role in the Santa Claus parade walked the parade route this year, rather than riding on a float. Moved by his inter- actions with the people he met along the way, he came to the club's next meeting with an idea. While the club has always contributed to large projects undertaken by the library or the hospital, he was looking for a way to have a more direct impact on people's lives. The result was the Random Acts of Kindness project, which the club is launching this month. The club has set aside money for each of the next six months and will kick it off in December by distributing Food Basics gift cards to fami- lies through Links2Care. Lions Club member Doug Penrice said the idea was first proposed a little more than a week ago and was so well received, the club wanted to get it started it before Christmas. While they have not yet settled on ideas for the coming months, he said there is no shortage of ideas. It may be a spontaneous, random act aimed at individ- uals or a targeted effort for people in need. "We'll look at all the options, whether it's seniors or children in need," he said. "Some might be very low key, or they might be a little more public."
