th ei fp .c a Th e IF P -H al to n H ill s | T hu rs da y, A pr il 11 ,2 01 9 | 10 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As a doctor in our com- munity, I'm increasingly worried about misinforma- tion in the news and on so- cial media about vaccina- tion. In medical school, doc- tors are taught to "do no harm," which makes it hard for us to live up to our professional responsibility when we see people choos- ing not to get vaccinated because of fake news. The facts are clear - since the introduction of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine there's been a 99 per cent reduc- tion in cases. And, since Canada introduced the po- lio vaccine, the disease has been eradicated. These conditions are debilitating and deadly. Because childhood vac- cinations are proven safe and effective in Ontario, we've forgotten how quick- ly and easily these diseases can spread and how devas- tating they can be. And we all need to get vaccinated if we can, because "herd im- munity" matters. Herd im- munity is like building a wall to keep illness at bay, and each person who gets vaccinated is another brick in that wall. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor about vaccines and don't spread fake news or misinforma- tion. Get the facts from a pro- fessional - get the facts from a doctor. DR. ROHIT KUMAR, OAKVILLE ANSWER TO DISTRACTED DRIVING IS EASY, PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE I read with great inter- est the article in the Mar. 28 issue by Herb Garbutt on distracted driving. It's en- couraging to know people are becoming more aware. However, it is shocking that distracted driving ac- counts for almost 40 per cent of all the tickets Const. Marc Taraso issued in Hal- ton in 2019 so far. Drivers know it's expen- sive when they get caught. It doesn't seem to be a de- terrent for some drivers. This is what we can do to save lives. It's not the end of the world if you pick up the phone while driving - but it could be the end of your world. That's distracted driv- ing. Is it worth the risk? Don't be tempted. Put your phone away before you drive. Be safe and stay alive. Sometimes the biggest problem has the simplest solution. Eventually it will become a habit, like put- ting on your seatbelt. Actu- ally when the phone is put away, there is a sense of freedom of obligation and the driver can concentrate on driving. It's all so easy. All you need is the will.
