Regional chair Gary Carr earned more than $230,000 last year in sala- ries, benefits and expens- es, according to a finance report from Halton staff. The remuneration re- port presented to regional councillors at their most recent meeting shows that the head of council earned $223,970 in salary and ben- efits in 2018, spent $5,091 on conferences and claimed $3,342 in other expenses. Carr also received a per di- em of $6,846 for sitting on the Niagara Escarpment Commission Board. Regional councillors who served throughout 2018 earned between $50,000 and $58,000 each, with the newest members of council elected last Oc- tober taking home be- tween $3,350 and $4,434 in salaries and benefits. Topping the list for con- ference expenses was Hal- ton Hills Coun. Clark Som- erville at $16,290, with $7,638 of that resulting from his duties as Halton's representative at the Fed- eration of Canadian Mu- nicipalities. The report also detailed the $43,025 in salaries, ben- efits and expenses in- curred by the Halton Re- gional Police Service Board and $25,470 paid to council members through- out Halton sitting on the conservation authority boards. In total, $1,526,463 was spent on remuneration and expenses for members of council and the boards, up slightly from $1,490,969 reported in 2017. Regional council mem- bers are also compensated by the local municipalities they serve - numbers that are reported separately by the four towns/cities in Halton.
