15 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,M ay 23,2019 theifp.ca LETTER TO THE EDITOR The Town of Halton Hills is pushing for a bus system that will end up costing ratepayers more per ride than we can afford - and will reduce door to door service such as the ActiVan pro- gram. I found this out when I joined some friends for a briefing on the Town of Halton Hills' pro- posed transit plan. If what we saw is the future for our town, then I suggest the taxpayers of Georgetown hang onto their wallets. The town's consultant said their plan will end up costing all of us $30 million in capital ex- penses with an annual operat- ing cost of $5 million. With no explanation of how we are going to pay for this un- necessary service! The initial part of the plan with enhanced free ActiVan and subsidized $3.50 Uber rides seemed perfectly reasonable for a small, spread-out community like Halton Hills. But then the plan calls for a reduction in existing ActiVan transport and the virtual elimi- nation of door-to-door service. All to be replaced by a fleet of town-run buses housed in an ex- pensive new bus barn. Worse yet, the routes that were proposed either go through largely vacant farm- land or mirror existing GO bus routes. Routes that appear to be de- signed more to bring workers in from Brampton than to meet the transportation needs of local residents. At a cost to the tax- payers of "$8 to $10 a ride." So they want us to give up door-to-door service that costs the town $6.50 a ride and replace it with poorly designed bus routes that cost $8 to $10 a ride. That's crazy thinking. Only a town council more in- terested in creating vanity lega- cy projects than serving the vot- ers would come up such a ridicu- lous idea. Time to wake up, George- town, before they destroy every- thing good about our home. D'ARCY KEENE, HALTON HILLS PROPOSED BUS SYSTEM WILL COST RATEPAYERS
