Joseph Gibbons Public School won first place and $3,000 for its multimedia entry in the World Down Syndrome Day School Con- test. The small school in north Georgetown under- took several initiatives to raise awareness about Down syndrome, including an HDSA bracelet fund- raiser, a dance party where students wore crazy socks - apparel that has become synonymous with celebrat- ing diversity and the uniqueness of Down syn- drome - and a trip to a To- ronto show by Famous Peo- ple Players, which is com- prised of actors with spe- cial needs. The students' efforts were captured in a video that was submitted as part of their contest entry. The school intends to use the funds to further ini- tiatives for students that promote equity and inclu- sion. The HDSA holds the contest annually for all Halton schools, and last year Georgetown's Sacre- Coeur won second place and a $2,000 prize. For more information visit www.haltondownsyn- drome.com.
