THE WAY WE WERE This Esquesing Historical Society photo shows the Georgetown Fire Department pouring water into the warehouse fire at the rear of Eagle Signal Company on Guelph Street (Hwy.7) on May 31, 1966. EHS photo It's pretty much a given that we've had a rotten six months of weather. As a matter of fact, we've not only had a crappy win- ter with more freezing rain than usual, but also flood- ing, snow storms, extreme cold - you name it, we've en- dured it. And as we've all stood in anticipation of finally en- joying the warmth of spring, well, it hasn't been great either. Spring keeps being scut- tled by a persistent Ol' Man Winter, who just won't quit. We'd have one some- what "springy day," fol- lowed by three cold, wet days. The only fashionable thing everyone could do is complain about the weath- er. For members of the car aficionado groups - you know, those beloved gear- heads who worship their precious high performance "babies" tucked away in storage until the sun is out and the mud is gone - well, it's been particularly stressful for them. They haven't been able to park their cars in the driveway and wash, wax or polish their babies, for fear of a flash storm. And going over to the car wash to hang out with other gear- heads was simply out of the question. The weather would not co-operate at all! Until now. The past holiday week- end in May actually pro- duced a couple of sunny days that dried up some muddy spots, and gave us weather that made wear- ing a jacket optional. The gardening crowd advanced upon the garden centres, and the gearheads hit the car washes, and were able to pull out their babies to apply yet another layer of wax. With the warmth of the spring weather, all is well in Halton Hills! Hopefully this weather will continue, because May 31 marks the beginning of another fair weather week- ly car event. Yup, Georgetown Cruise Night is back May 31, every Friday night un- til Aug. 30. Last year, the fate of the weekly gathering was in jeopardy, as longtime orga- nizers Mike and Lynne Boyd were stepping down after 17 years. Fortunately, Mike and Allison Farrugia picked up the torch and gathered some friends together to volunteer, saving cruise night. They were also able to move the event from its longtime location in Nor- val to the front parking lot of Moldmasters Sport- splex, a far superior ven- ue. The new location not on- ly gives the cruise night much better visibility, but is in close proximity to var- ious restaurants and fast food outlets. The arena is also open, giving access to the arena canteen (french fries and gravy - a staple food at any cruise night!) and use of the washrooms. And building the atmo- sphere, there's lots of good old rock 'n' roll tunes pump- ing out over the parking lot. I tell ya, just typing these words makes me for- get all about the crummy weather we've had the past six months. I have a warm fuzzy feeling going through my body. I checked with Mike and Allison to see what's in store for this season. They said the concept will not change, and all proceeds from the 50-50 draw will again be donated to Georgetown Hospital Foundation. They will also have weekly draws and they will hold theme nights, all of which will be posted in advance on their Facebook page, "George- town Cruise Night." Mike said last year's event was so successful that they will do the same, adopting the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage. I do have to admit I'm a bit disappointed. I have a previous commitment that same night, so I'm unable to attend the kickoff of the 19th year of Georgetown Cruise Night - The Side- kick and I do however in- tend to be there the follow- ing weeks, for sure. So it's time to get out the car wax and dust off the lawn chairs - Cruise Night is back May 31! Ted Brown is a free- lance journalist for the IFP. He can be contacted at tedbit@hotmail.com.
