The Halton Hills Public Library will host its first-ever Drag Storytime on July 20. The storytime is hosted by Fay Slift and Fluffy Soufflé, hosts of Drag Storytime since 2016. The duo has performed all over the Greater Toronto Area with notable events at the Toronto Public Library's March Break, the Caledon Public Li- brary's March Break, and the Toronto Pride Festival among many others. Both Fay and Fluffy are experienced child educators. Fay, also known as JP Kane, is an educator with the Toronto Dis- trict School Board. Fluffy, who also goes by Kaleb Robertson, is a child care provider and cultural producer (DJ, performer, and event host). The program celebrates diversity and literacy in a supportive and inclusive envi- ronment. The event includes stories, songs, and laughs as the pair prove how reading is fun-damental. "The LGBTQ community is at a higher risk of discrimination and violence," Jessi- ca May, the mother of an 11-year-old trans advocate. "If we raise children with an open mind to different kinds of people, my community is safer." May said while her daughter has power- ful allies at school, there is a lack of under- standing among other children. "She is often questioned about her gen- der and genitalia and it bothers her," May said. "My view is that the exposure isn't in- tended to convert children, but to reveal variety and the spice of life. "The more interactions LGBTQ people have with children, the better" The HHPL welcomes LGBTQ+ parents, families with gender variant children, and all members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those who support them. All ages are welcome to attend with or without chil- dren. "We are really excited to be hosting our very first Drag Storytime in support of di- versity and inclusion," Douglas Davey, manager of children's and youth services at the HHPL, said. "HHPL is a place where everyone of any age can feel welcome and supported. Drag Storytime also allows parents to open up dialogue with their children and share a message of acceptance, under- standing, and positivity."
