Ontario Power Genera- tion has purchased the sta- tion, along with the Napa- nee Generating Station, and the remaining 50 per cent of Toronto's Portlands Energy Centre from TC Energy for $2.87 billion. "The role that natural gas plays in maintaining system reliability has be- come even more important with the addition of inter- mittent wind and solar generation in recent years," Ken Hartwick, president and CEO of OPG, said in a prepared release. "Natural gas is the partner or enabler of renewable energy, providing the flex- ibility required to ensure a reliable electricity sys- tem." The Halton Hills Gener- ating Station opened in 2010 and has the capacity to generate 683 megawatts, enough to power 600,000 homes. The station em- ploys approximately 24 full-time workers. "The sale of these facil- ities is part of our ongoing efforts to maximize value for our shareholders and fund our industry-leading secured growth program in a disciplined manner," Russ Girling, CEO and president of TC Energy, said in a prepared release. TC Energy still main- tains ownership of six fa- cilities, including the Bruce Power nuclear facil- ity - with a generating ca- pacity of 6,288 megawatts - which generates about 30 per cent of Ontario's elec- tricity.
