The festival is widely celebrated in East Asian countries, including Chi- na, Japan, Korea, and Viet- nam. Of about 200 Chinese families living in George- town, Isabella Liu, festival organizer, said about half are members of the HHCA. The festival will feature traditional music, dancing, a tai chi demonstration, as well as a Chinese poem reading by Wellington-Hal- ton Hills MP, Michael Chong. A traditional Chinese treat, mooncake, is eaten during the festival and will be available to try at the festival. A mooncake is a rich pastry filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste. The HHCA was formed following the success of the Wenjiang Festival, named after Georgetown's sister city in China. "After the festival we de- cided to set up an organiza- tion," Liu said. "We want Chinese people not to just stay in our own communi- ty. We want everybody to join the community and share our culture." Outside of festivals, the association has volun- teered time at the seniors centre teaching tai chi and how to make dumplings. The Mid-Autumn festi- val celebration will be held on Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the John Elliott Theatre in Georgetown. Visitors are welcome to enjoy Chinese culture, per- formances, and free sam- ples of mooncake.
