Our re- lationship with our read- ers is built on transparen- cy, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. This article is part of that pro- ject. As we draw closer to election day, Oct. 21, I want to share with you some of our plans. Our journalists are committed to telling the lo- cal story while also tapping into the wider resources of Torstar to give you com- plete coverage of the race at home and in Ottawa. Here is some of what you'll find in the Vote 2019 section of this website: Our reporters will be connecting with local vot- ers to learn about their concerns or wishes for the future, and their expecta- tions of their federal repre- sentatives. We've already written a series of helpful articles on topics including how to vote if you're at school, out of the country or otherwise away from home during the election and federal government finances. You can read these and more online at www.theifp.ca or in a future edition of the In- dependent. iPolitics INTEL, a non- partisan Torstar-owned operation, has written pro- files of candidates running in six major parties: Bloc Québécois, Conservative party, Green party, Liberal party, New Democratic Party and People's Party of Canada. iPolitics used the follow- ing criteria when deciding who to include: . At the time the general election is called, the party is represented in the House of Commons by a MP; . The party intends to run candidates in at least 90 per cent of all Canadian electoral districts in the general election; and . The party must contin- uously hold a 3 per cent (+/- 1 per cent) approval rating from pre-campaign projections polls, which in- dicates that the party has a good chance of having a candidate elected. The profiles will be available to registered us- ers, using your postal code to filter candidates. Our local newsrooms will ensure you also know about any other candidates - the independents or rep- resentatives of smaller par- ties - who will appear on your ballot. We will host a live feed of the Oct. 7 leaders debate, hosted by the Canadian De- bate Production Partner- ship, of which the Toronto Star is a part. You can also sign up for The Lead, a newsletter cu- rated by veteran political reporter Kady O'Malley. O'Malley, who writes for iPolitics, will endeavour to provide you with the latest happenings and detailed analyses - along with her thoughts on what the vari- ous developments will mean in the context of the ongoing campaign - in an unbiased yet unabashed manner.
