The Halton Hills Fire Depart- ment invited me to take part in a search-and-rescue training mis- sion at a real house used for train- ing by the department. The house, on a rural property, is one of four used to train local re- cruits. My job is to keep my hand on the shoulder of the firefighter-in- training in front of me, while sweeping an axe handle along the floor to search for two training dummies, a man and a child somewhere inside the simulated smoke-filled house. Inside the smoke, I can barely see my own hands.
