Pat Lewis photo COMMUNITY It's Ontario Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week - and the Halton Hills Fire Department is reminding residents to prevent carbon monoxide in their homes with annu- al inspections of fuel- burning appliances. "Public education is a key component of com- munity safety," Mayor Rick Bonnette said in a prepared release. "Our fire department plays an important role in helping families reduce the chance of a CO tragedy in their homes." Carbon monoxide alarms should be in- stalled in homes with fu- el-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached ga- rages. Appliances in- clude: furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fire- places, portable fuel- burning heaters, genera- tors, barbecues, stoves and vehicles. "In Ontario, more than 65 per cent of injuries and deaths from CO occur in the home," said Halton Hills fire Chief Harry Olivieri. "I recommend that a CO alarm be in- stalled on every storey of a home according to man- ufacturer's instructions and that residents have their fuel-burning appli- ances inspected by a reg- istered contractor."
