The Town of Halton Hills has launched a new survey through Let's Talk Halton Hills gauging the public opinion of raising backyard chickens. While urban residents are currently prohibited from raising chickens in their backyard, some mu- nicipalities have permitted them while imposing a va- riety of restrictions. "Right now, the bylaw states that only properties deemed agricultural may keep backyard chickens," Mayor Rick Bonnette, said in a prepared release. "We understand that there is some interest in this issue so I hope no one chickens out from offering an opinion." If changed, the bylaw could allow backyard chickens in urban residen- tial areas (Acton and Georgetown), hamlets (Glen Williams and Nor- val), and rural clusters (Ashgrove, Ballinafad, Bannockburn, Crewson's Corners, Henderson's Cor- ners, Hornby, Limehouse, Silvercreek, and Terra Cot- ta). Staff are expected to bring forward a report to council in May, detailing the results of the public consultation. While a num- ber of communities have considered allowing back- yard chickens, some have chosen to prohibit the practice while others have implemented pilot projects or permitted hen keeping while imposing a variety of restrictions.
