JP Gratton is the face behind Sweet Nostalgia, a country store nestled on Main Street in Glen Wil- liams that offers up a wide variety of retro candy and vintage general store ad- vertising. "I started collecting gen- eral store advertising about 10 years ago," he ex- plained. "I was running out of room to display every- thing in my house, so I thought it would be cool to set up as an old-time store." The local resident may have inherited his love of classic stores, noting both sets of his grandparents had shops when he was growing up -- with his fa- ther taking over at his grandfather's variety store for a while as well. Gratton opened the doors to Sweet Nostalgia among the Williams Mill Creative Arts Studios last year and has received a positive response from the community so far, with about a dozen or more col- lectors of vintage items fre- quenting his establish- ment. Those who aren't in the market for general store advertising can peruse a wide selection of retro can- dy, including classics like Cracker Jack, sponge tof- fee, Flying Saucers, Bazoo- ka gum and plenty more. "I want it to be the gener- al store experience that takes people back in time for a few minutes," he said. "It's a trip down memory lane." Gratton has over 100 original vintage signs, a dozen coin-operated ma- chines and a couple hun- dred tins in his collection, which is divvied up be- tween the store and his home displays. "But everything in the store is for sale," he noted. "I like to look for this stuff and buy it. It's all about the hunt." For more information visit Sweet Nostalgia's Facebook page.
