It has been four months since we closed the Acton Legion branch, during which time we have lost four good friends who have since passed on. They are Bill Fields, Former President George O'Donnell, Veteran Bryan Alder and Second World War Veteran Harold Rob- son. We didn't even have the chance to say goodbye, al- though several of us were able to form a Colour Guard of Honour for Har- old's drive-by funeral pro- cession. There will be some cele- brations of life at a later date. Wes, Eric, Pat and Keith have led a team of volun- teers doing maintenance and cleaning the building. Floors have been refur- bished and doors have been replaced. We have also had the Naval anti-aircraft gun in place to complement the Army vehicles and the Air Force Plane. Billy and his wife Joan have been tending the Cenotaph garden daily, as Eileen cannot get there ev- ery day. We missed being able to celebrate VE day on May 8. Who knows, perhaps we will be able to celebrate VJ day on August 15. The trip to Sunnybrook had to be cancelled of course, but we sent the Vets a donation of $1,000 for their comfort fund. If you have not renewed your membership for 2020 please do so soon, as we need to maintain the build- ing even though we are closed. You can renew member- ship online using a credit card. Sign on to Legion.ca/ renewal. You can also com- municate directly with the branch by email and it will be passed on to Kati, who will accept mailed in cheques. As we were not able to run an election in May, the existing executive were asked to remain in their po- sitions, and all accepted. Elections will be held when possible. Any updates on when we can reopen will be post- ed on our website and so- cial media. David Maloney is the public relations officer for the Acton Legion, Branch 197.
