John Muirhead photo CURBSIDE CONCERT The Halton Hills Public Library has announced the library's new chief li- brarian. Melanie Southern will take over on August 17. Southern comes to the role with more than 20 years of public library and community building expe- rience. She came to Halton Region in 2000, with the Burlington Public Library, and progressed into more senior management posi- tions, most recently with the City of Mississauga. "We are excited to wel- come Melanie as our next chief librarian and her leadership will be vital to fulfilling our vision to make our library a path to worlds of imagination, in- novation, and opportuni- ty," Tamara Smith, chair of the HHPL board of direc- tors, said. "We are pleased to have found an engaging executive with the energy and passion to continue to meet the needs of our com- munity." Southern said the role of chief librarian would be the culmination of her ca- reer. "Halton Hills Public Li- brary is an outstanding, well-managed system with a commitment to staff ex- cellence, an engaged Board, a tremendous rela- tionship with Town staff, the Mayor and Council, and an increasingly di- verse and growing com- munity that call the Town of Halton Hills their home." Southern will take over the role of chief librarian from Geoffrey Cannon, who has served the library for four decades. "Geoff's retirement is a bittersweet moment in the history of Halton Hills Public Library," Smith said. "We will continue to benefit from his dedication and leadership, which has provided a firm foundation as Ms. Southern takes on this important role in our community."
