An Acton resident will be bringing people over to the dark side -- one cook- ie at a time. "Our motto is 'everybody deserves a cookie'," said Dark Side Baking owner Cassandra McBride. Both a nod to "geek culture" and the variety of genres and sub-genres, her baked goods aim to accommodate a wide range of dietary restrictions, spanning from vegan desserts to keto treats. "There's something for everyone, whether you're into 'Star Trek', 'Star Wars' or 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'," McBride said. "I wanted to start a bak- ery built on the same premise. It doesn't matter what you eat or can't eat, I'll make something for you." McBride was laid off from her job in the travel industry just weeks before the rest of the country began to feel the effects of the pandemic. "I looked for a job for a bit, but that wasn't going anywhere," she said. An avid baker, McBride said she de- cided to take a shot at selling her baked goods at the farmer's markets. "I set up a commercial kitchen at home," she said. "Now, I've taken over the dining room. It's really grown." Her home-based workspace is certi- fied by the region, and now includes fridges, freezers, shelving, and a cake- decorating station. "It's been more time-consuming than my job ever was," McBride said. "Now, I do it 12 hours a day." Baking a range of sweet and savoury goods including butter tarts, breads, cookies, pies and cakes, McBride said new items are always in the works and many are adaptable for different di- etary restrictions. "We're shifting gears now with fall upon us," she said, this week, she's de- veloping pumpkin recipes. She's also taking pre-orders for pies for the holidays.
