"The dogs help to mitigate people's men- tal health, illnesses and injuries," Bruno Amari, head trainer of Searchlight Service Dogs, said. "The most common is for post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is running rampant through our society." However, the psychological service dogs are primarily paired with military and first-responders. "Those occupations tend to have bigger support systems for fundraising," Amari said. "They band together in a way civilians cannot." While Maiden was provided to McLeod free of payment, the family is expected to help raise funds to allow Searchlight to con- tinue training dogs. "If I could give the dogs away for free, I would, but we need to cover the costs," Amari said. Service dogs are purchased from reputable breeders, and the cost to train them appropriately adds up. "A fully trained service dog is trained in such a manner that it does have legal access rights to accompany its client anywhere the public has access," Amari said. Emotional support dogs, Amari notes, are a completely different relationship. "Emotional support dogs are basically a companion," he said. "They don't have pub- lic access rights." Right now, Amari said, anybody with a couple hundred dollars is able to purchase a service dog vest for their pet. "There's no way to differentiate between a fully trained service dog and somebody's pet," Amari said. "The only thing that stands out is the way that dog behaves." However, Amari noted, while there is no current accreditation in the province, he hopes to see that change. The Ontario Service Dogs Act was intro- duced in 2016, passed its first reading and has been awaiting its second reading. McLeod and her family are actively fundraising, with a goal of raising $25,000, to support Searchlight Service Dogs. Dona- tions can be made through the family's Go- FundMe page, with funds going directly to Searchlight Service Dogs. NEWS Continued from page 18
