Notice of Road Closure - Longfield Road between Mowbray Place East & West Thomas Frazier, a local tailor, built this wood-frame structure on Main Street in Glen Williams circa 1847, where he operated a general store. Timothy Eaton, founder of the T. Eaton Co., had his first job in Canada here in 1854. The building was subsequently Reeve and Clarke Books and is currently a real estate office. Then photo: EHS, Now photo: Alison Walker THEN AND NOW On behalf of the execu- tive and members of Branch 197, I offer our deepest sym- pathy to Ren, Evan and fam- ily in the loss of our com- rade Karen. Karen was a former exec- utive member of the branch who was a wonderful help to me when I was president. She will certainly be missed. As previously stated, this year's Remembrance pa- rade has been cancelled. We plan to hold a service on Wednesday, Nov. 11 and as we don't know what the re- strictions will be imposed regarding the number of at- tendees on that date, we will proceed with a limited num- ber of Legion members. The ceremony will take place between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m. All attendees must be registered for contact trac- ing purposes. Wreaths will be laid on the previous day by members of the execu- tive. If the numbers allow, we will welcome more mem- bers at the ceremony. Fami- ly wreaths can be purchased by emailing the branch. The following quote tak- en is from a letter received from our Dominion Com- mand President, Thomas Ir- vine, encouraging us to work on this year's Poppy Drive. "The funds provided by this traditional annual event remains more impor- tant than ever as many head into an era of financial inse- curity." We will however proceed with caution, by placing our poppy boxes in the larger outlets, i.e., Beer store , Li- quor Store, Giant Tiger, No Frills, etc. There will be no Legion members in atten- dance. We are hoping that the General Public will be extra generous this year as our ability to canvas is greatly restricted. It is extremely important that members renew their membership for 2021. You can renew online at https:// www.legion.ca/join-us/re- newal or you can submit a cheque to the branch by mail and include your Le- gion Number as well as your membership type. Annual membership is unchanged at $60. Eric has created a mailbox on the Kitchen Door at the back entrance to the Legion for those wishing to place envelopes ad- dressed to Membership RCL Br.197. November 11th will be an even sadder day this year as we will be losing our own WW!! Sweetheart, Phyllis Bunn. Phyllis, 96 has decid- ed to relocate to Colling- wood in order to be close to her family. Phyllis, it will be remembered, signed the Veterans Covenant with the Town of Halton Hills, on our behalf, back in June 2014. Please check the web- page at legion197.com, and in addition we will be post- ing information on Face- book. David Maloney is the public relations officer for the Acton Legion, Branch 197. He can be reached at rclbr197@cogeco.net. OPINION FAREWELL, DEAR COMRADE DAVID MALONEY Column
