An affordable housing project could begin con- struction as early as 2022 in Halton Hills. The Town has identified an opportunity for a mixed income rental develop- ment at 17 Guelph St. Since 2011, there have been no new rental hous- ing units built in town, with a current rental va- cancy rate of 1.5 per cent. "I'm very pleased to see this come forward," Coun. Ann Lawlor said during a recent council meeting. "We've been talking about it for a long time." Pre-development work on the property would be- gin immediately, with con- struction to begin as early as 2022. "I'm very glad we're do- ing this ourselves," Coun. Moya Johnson said. "We've sold other pieces of proper- ty to developers with the promise of, if not afford- able housing, seniors hous- ing, and the next thing you know we're getting luxury condos for close to a mil- lion dollars." An environmental as- sessment will be required to redevelop the property. A former brownfield site, 17 Guelph St. was previous- ly contaminated with an underground storage tank, which was remediated in 2015. The pre-development will be paid for through a $40,000 seed contribution from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. In early 2021, the town will seek third-party hous- ing providers interested in the opportunity to design, build, operate, and main- tain the proposed develop- ment. An additional $284,000 has been requested for the Town's 2021 capital budget, to undertake all remaining pre-development activi- ties.
