For the second year in a row, the Halton Regional Police Ser- vice will not be meeting its budget target and, once again, it says pro- vincial downloads are the culprit. The service's 2021 funding re- quest, which was approved by the Halton Police Board and will go before regional council for final endorsement Dec. 16, is for $168.8 million. This represents an increase of $6.8 million, or 4.2 per cent, over last year. Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner points out the budget does reach Halton Region's guide- line to not exceed a 3.7-per-cent increase when an $800,000 down- load from the province is sub- tracted. In late 2019, the Province an- nounced a reduction in Halton police funding of $1.6 million. Half of the funding cut was covered when the region ap- proved the police service's 2020 budget. That budget also saw a 4.2-per- cent increase over the previous year's budget.
